ICU Nurse Shot, Forced To Restrain Colleague During Hospital Shooting

A 19-year-old nurse was shot in both legs, brutally beaten, and forced to restrain a coworker during the UPMC York shooting—and now, she’s facing a grueling recovery with no clear financial support. A GoFundMe has been launched to help Jackxtyn Yank, whose injuries left her unable to walk.

“Please Don’t Kill Me”

Jackxtyn Yank had just returned to work after celebrating her 19th birthday when the gunman stormed her ICU floor. Peeking out to see the commotion, she was spotted, dragged into the hall, and beaten with a gun before being forced to zip-tie a coworker’s hands together.

“I begged him: ‘Please don’t shoot me, I just turned 19. I just want to go home,’” Yank’s father said she told him later. The gunman responded chillingly: “Jesus and my wife sacrificed their lives, you need to too.”

Then, he shot her point-blank in the left thigh—the bullet piercing through to her right knee.

Hiding While Gunfire Rained Down

Despite her injuries, Yank was forced to limp through the ICU and close the blinds to keep officers out. As the gunman became distracted, she slipped into a bathroom and called her father, sobbing.

“She whispered, ‘I’ve been shot. He’s going to kill me. Please come save me.’ Then the call cut out to the sound of gunfire exploding through the hospital.”

Fighting To Recover

Yank was eventually rescued by officers, but her right leg is immobilized, and she faces an excruciating recovery. The financial burden of medical costs, lost wages, and therapy is overwhelming.
